It’s been three months since we started this story and finally, I can see the end coming. To go over it again, the original idea was Afromusic, a story about the history of Nigerian pop. After some research I realised that was going to be a little hectic so we dropped it. Later, Eseosa Belo-Osagie brought up the idea to do a smaller story about album covers and we went with it.
When I first thought of making an animated film, I called Ani, an old internet friend, and vomited my idea: it’s a film about weddings, inspired by a conversation on I Said What I Said (from 120:05), 2D, maybe stop motion, the story told from the perspective of a lady getting wed, colourful animated scenes to highlight the peculiar details. I wanted to know how much to expect to spend and how long it might take to get it done.
From that conversation, I learnt a few things:
A few days ago I got this email from the CAC. I expected this at the very beginning (not three months later) but to be honest, I’m not too surprised.
I almost regret telling anyone I’m making a magazine. I’m so far from making a physical publication. Why was my “end goal” even to make a magazine in the first place? 🤷🏽♂️
I love a personal essay. It’s my favourite thing to read on Medium. I’ve even tried to curate my recommendations to see just that, but no luck so far.
Of course we put a lot of words on the internet, but essays about self / to self are a special way to experience someone.
Tonight I‘m listening to Emmit Fenn because Ada recommended it. Ada doesn’t know me, but she writes to me.
When you take a piece of yourself and put it on the internet, where does it all go? Well, some of it comes to me. And some of that becomes me.
All the images for the J Guide are done now, so we’ve started putting the comic together. You can check what we’ve uploaded so far on Instagram @thejguide. There’s still a lot of work to do on the feed and the story might change a little but so far it looks good.
Onyinye is still trying to get paper for the brochure (sigh, it’s tough) and I haven’t had the mental space to try other options. …
I’ve been talking about Wuruwuru and doing “research” for many months now but we haven’t actually finished anything. No article, no dataset, no album, no brochure, no video. Nothing. Just audio. 😭
Anyway, we hope to start publishing in November. Tomiwa will complete the J Guide with Vanny and Eseosa’s writing an essay about album covers.
We need 90gsm kraft paper for the physical brochure and OD hasn’t been able to source this yet. Her printer uses an HP Indigo so there’s a compatibility constraint too. We’re going to exhaust all options to find the paper locally, but if not…
On October 16, 2018, I got a DM from a stranger. Considering how long it was, it was probably better as an email. He was a 19-year old designer who was stuck with shallow-thinking bosses and wanted to learn how to get them to think critically and listen to him. I gave him some generic advice but I knew it was largely useless. He was not the problem; they were.
One year later, he sent another DM for me to check out arthistoryproject. A few days later, he asked to borrow my copy of Grid Systems. After this, he continued…
Real crowd pleaser
