I’m fascinated by newness and otherness and all the different ways we choose to live. Strange and counter cultural people make me question things and wonder how else to approach my life. I used to have a lot of longing for this newness — for all the lives beyond. But recently, I’ve come to recognise the shape of my own life and slowly, my longing is being tempered down to admiration. I’m a simple guy with simple interests — a very curious vanilla person. I may be fascinated by all those other lives, but do I want them? What is real for me, and what is fantasy?

A friend once asked me “why do you always try to be good?”. There’s a thin line between being good for being good sake, and being good for fear of being bad. Sometimes I can’t tell the difference. Some of the problems: prioritising other people at the expense of my own feelings, suppressing my emotional reaction to bullshit, refusing to stand up for myself to avoid confrontation, rabid delusion and a compulsion to come out of every situation feeling like “I did the right thing”.
